Pool House
The house itself sits in one acre of beautiful gardens with a large natural pool at its centre. In summer, the pool is covered with water-lilies and irises. There are between 200/300 gold fish, and one solitary Koi Carp named Reg. There is also a family of moorhens which took up residence in the bulrushes two years ago, and have produced 16 chicks each year; so there is plenty of birdlife in the garden. There are many herbaceous borders, fruit trees, including apple, pear, damson, greengage, plum, crab apple and mulberry, plus soft fruit and vegetable beds.
Our rare breed hens - Hesta, Henrietta, Harriet, Penelope and Priscilla roam freely round the garden and supply all our eggs. They are, on occasion accompanied by our Persian cat, Phoebe.
The house dates back to 1710 when it was a farm labourers’ two up two down thatched cottage belonging to Freens Court Manor, a medieval moated manor house which was burnt down in the 1950s. The fields that surround Pool House at that time were orchards, and are now arable. The house was extended in the 1940s, and again in 1988, and the thatched roof tiled with Welsh slate.
